Less like an Eton Mess – More like a Neapolitan

It’s summer, and no doubt we'll all be indulging in our favourite ice-cream trying to keep cool.

So, whilst you're rifling through the dessert freezer in the local supermarket just consider that most of those brands are now owned by the biggest ice-cream company in the world.

Yes, Ben & Jerrys, Cornetto, Wall's, Carte D'or, even Viennetta the stalwart of every dinner party since the 80's and Fab lollies a classic since the 60's.

The Scoop

In late 2025, Unilever completed the separation of its global ice-cream business into a standalone company now known as The Magnum Ice Cream Company (MICC).

On the wrapper it just looked like a demerger but in fact, it was a strategic move that left both portions able to focus on what they did best.

Unilever can continue to focus on beauty, wellbeing, and personal care while MICC can concentrate on selling ice-cream on a global scale with brands we’ve all grown up with, recognise instantly, and love the taste of.

In effect, it was a positive 'Split' (if you remember those) that had been a long time coming. It wasn’t framed as a fallout or failure. It was framed as future clarity.

Different priorities. Different growth paths. Same fundamental recipe for success but served in two portions.

Demerger stories like this tend to succeed when:

  • The businesses have different outlooks

What works for a fast-moving ice-cream brand doesn’t always align with a premium beauty or lifestyle offering.

  • Focus becomes blurry

Too many priorities under one umbrella can dilute decision making.

  • Hidden value is revealed

Separating a business can make performance clearer and investment more targeted.

  • Leadership can be simplified

Less internal politics, more cohesion amongst management.

The Sweet Course

We're not all a multi-national brand but even for a small business these principles still apply. The most successful business separations aren't always about conflict, and most can turn an Eton Mess into a neatly defined Neapolitan.
